BASF Unveils Major Project Developments Across Battery Materials, Polyamides, and Pesticides

March 21, 2025 – Recently, BASF has unveiled developments in three major projects spanning battery materials, polyamides, and pesticides, showcasing its extensive layout and profound strength in the chemical industry.

In the realm of battery materials, the Phase II project of BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Ltd.’s Changsha base officially commenced production in June 2024. According to Color Masterbatch Industry Network, this project primarily manufactures high-nickel battery cathode materials for automotive applications, with an annual production capacity increased to approximately 100,000 tons. Peng Wenjie, Chief Operating Officer of BASF Shanshan, revealed that the company has been dedicated to independent research and development, successfully addressing the challenge of structural collapse in lithium cobalt oxide at high voltages and pioneering the industry with the launch of 4.45V lithium cobalt oxide. Additionally, the company has developed ternary materials for nickel-rich solid-state batteries and introduced a new product system for sodium battery materials to meet the rapidly growing production demands of the global battery industry.

In the polyamide sector, BASF has collaborated with Anhui Well Low-Carbon Technology Co., Ltd. (WAL) to create a plastic gas tank for commercial vehicles. This gas tank utilizes BASF’s high-performance Ultramid® polyamide material, which is 20% lighter than aluminum alternatives and over 50% lighter compared to steel. Moreover, the production process is more energy-efficient, employing a one-piece injection molding technique that eliminates the secondary welding process typically required for metal tanks. The gas tank not only exhibits exceptional rigidity, weld seam strength, and UV resistance but also boasts high burst pressure resistance, meeting the stringent requirements of its applications.

In the pesticide domain, a strategic cooperation intention has been reached between Limin Chemical’s subsidiary, Deyan Zhichuang, and BASF. During the visit of Mr. Livio Tedesche, Global President of BASF’s Agricultural Solutions division, to China, both parties signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement to jointly advance the development, registration, and commercialization of new pesticides in China. Prior to this, the management teams of both companies had engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions in Beijing regarding the innovation of new pesticides, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration.
