March 6, 2025 – Covestro Boosts Global Polycarbonate Specialty Films Capacity with New Thailand Line
Covestro has recently announced the mechanical completion of its new production line at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Thailand, marking a significant enhancement of its global polycarbonate (PC) specialty films capacity. This multi-million-euro investment project, initiated in 2023, has successfully reached its objectives and is set to create approximately 40 new job opportunities.

The state-of-the-art facility adopts industry-leading technology, aiming for efficient production while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. With the expanded capacity, Covestro will be better positioned to meet the growing demand for innovative specialty films from customers in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the medical technology sector. This move is also poised to further strengthen Covestro’s Solutions and Specialties segment.
According to AsiaMB, Covestro has been operating specialty films production facilities in Thailand since 2007, producing high-performance films such as the Makrofol® series of polycarbonate films and Bayfol® products for various applications including healthcare, automotive, identification documents, and electronics. Notably, the Map Ta Phut plant has been ISCC PLUS certified since 2022, enabling it to produce and supply mass-balance products. This certification allows for the mathematical allocation of bio-based or recycled raw materials, conserving fossil resources and reducing CO2 emissions without compromising product quality compared to pure fossil-based products.
As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality polymer materials and components, Covestro achieved sales of 14.2 billion euros in 2024, a slight decrease of 1.4% year-on-year. The company boasts 46 production sites globally and employs around 17,500 people. As Germany’s largest polycarbonate producer, Covestro offers a diverse range of polycarbonate film products, including high-performance polycarbonate films and polycarbonate blend films.
In line with its strategic planning, Covestro anticipates limited growth in the standard polycarbonate market. Consequently, the company is shifting more of its polycarbonate output towards the Solutions and Specialties segment to tap into high-growth market shares. The expansion of polycarbonate films production in Thailand exemplifies this strategy, reinforcing Covestro’s global leadership in the polycarbonate domain. Earlier, Covestro announced the expansion of its polycarbonate plant in Ohio, USA, demonstrating its commitment to continuous capacity expansion.
