Breakthrough in Eco-Friendly Cable Technology: Guangdong Powers Up New 35kV Line

January 18, 2025 – Guangdong Power Grid Commissions World’s First 35kV Non-Crosslinked Polyethylene Eco-Friendly Cable

Exciting news has emerged from the Meizhou Power Supply Bureau of Guangdong Power Grid Corporation: “The completion and handover testing of the 35kV Baolong Line 329 has been successfully concluded, and the line has been smoothly activated and successfully energized!” This milestone signifies the official launch of the world’s first 35kV novel non-crosslinked polyethylene (PE) eco-friendly cable within the Guangdong Power Grid, marking a significant breakthrough in China’s research and development of new PE insulating materials and cable technology.

Traditionally, the power industry has predominantly utilized crosslinked PE as the insulating material for cables. However, this material poses several environmental challenges, including difficulties in recycling, resistance to degradation, high production energy consumption, and the generation of byproduct gases during the crosslinking process, which undermine efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve sustainability goals.

AsiaMB has learned that the new generation of non-crosslinked PE insulating cables presents notable advantages. With lower production energy consumption, enhanced recyclability, and superior aging resistance, these cables excel in both environmental performance and economic efficiency, positioning them as a pivotal direction for future cable material development. The successful deployment of this eco-friendly cable within the China Southern Power Grid not only fills the technological and equipment gap for new-generation non-crosslinked PE eco-friendly cables in 35kV power systems but also lays a solid foundation for the subsequent research and application of PE eco-friendly cables in higher voltage levels.
