Innovative Collaboration: Covestro and Osel Transform Car Parts into Sustainable Materials

November 14, 2024 – In a pioneering move towards sustainability in the automotive sector, Covestro has deepened its collaboration with Osel, a leading plastic recycling enterprise in China, to explore new avenues in automotive plastic recycling. The focal point of this partnership is the recycling of plastic components, such as headlights, from end-of-life vehicles, transforming them into high-quality materials that can be reused in automobile manufacturing. This innovative initiative not only addresses the industry’s urgent need for sustainability but also provides practical solutions to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Previously, Covestro and Osel achieved remarkable success in recycling polycarbonate water buckets. Since 2020, their collaboration has led to the annual recycling of up to one million 19-liter polycarbonate buckets, which are converted into high-performance post-consumer recycled (PCR) polycarbonate using advanced technology. This material is widely used in electronics, household appliances, and automobiles. The launch of this new project marks a significant leap forward in their cooperation within the realm of automotive plastic recycling.

Under this framework, Osel will supply recycled polycarbonate materials derived from end-of-life vehicle headlights, while Covestro will leverage its robust R&D capabilities to process these materials into high-quality PCR polycarbonate, meeting the stringent standards of automotive engineering applications. The establishment of this closed-loop recycling model not only effectively reduces waste generation and carbon emissions in the automobile manufacturing process but also significantly enhances resource utilization efficiency, setting a benchmark for the green transformation of the automotive industry.

As regulatory pressures mount and market expectations for sustainability grow, the automotive industry urgently requires robust and innovative solutions on the path to achieving ‘material circularity’. The partnership between Covestro and Osel undoubtedly sets a new standard in the industry. By developing compliant and high-performance recycled materials, they not only address the challenge of plastic waste management in the automotive sector but also demonstrate the vast potential of high-value recycling solutions, injecting strong momentum into the industry’s shift towards a greener and more efficient future.

Looking ahead, with the continuous enhancement of environmental awareness and technological advancements, similar collaboration models are poised to become key drivers of sustainability in the automotive industry and beyond. The joint efforts of Covestro and Osel not only establish a new paradigm for sustainable development in the automotive sector but also contribute invaluable experience to the global plastic recycling and circular utilization landscape.
