UHMWPE Industry in China Enters New Phase of Rapid Growth

August 29, 2024 – Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), a polymer compound renowned for its exceptional wear resistance, self-lubricating properties, and chemical stability, is increasingly favored across various industries. Its products, available in various forms such as plates, rods, and profiles, find widespread applications in sectors like machinery and petrochemicals. Recently, with the rapid growth in domestic demand, the UHMWPE industry has entered a new phase of rapid development.

According to AsiaMB, the research and development of UHMWPE in China can be traced back to the 1970s. Over the years, several domestic chemical research institutes and enterprises have continuously invested in research, driving the localization process of UHMWPE. Entering the 21st century, significant projects, including the establishment of a 10,000-ton production line by Beijing Auxiliary Agent No.2 Plant and the invention of a new process by Donghua University, have significantly enhanced domestic production capacity.

Currently, the domestic production capacity of UHMWPE has reached approximately 250,000 tons per year, with considerable ongoing and planned expansions. Prominent players like Celanese, Henan Wosen, and Anhui Fengda New Materials have emerged as leaders in this field. These companies continually improve product quality and market competitiveness by adopting advanced technologies and expanding production scales.

Remarkably, UHMWPE has made significant breakthroughs in lithium battery separator applications in recent years. Industrial research achievements from the Yangzi Petrochemical Research Institute and product innovations from companies like Daqing Petrochemical and Yanshan Petrochemical mark the domestic UHMWPE industry’s progression into high-end applications.

Overall, with technological advancements and sustained market demand, the domestic UHMWPE industry is poised for broader development. In the future, this industry is expected to play a more significant role in areas like new energy and high-end manufacturing, driving the continuous upgrading of China’s chemical industry.
