Synthetic Fibers Go Green: UNIFI’s CiCLO – Enabled REPREVE Solution

April 22, 2025 – A new solution has emerged to tackle the environmental challenges of synthetic fibers. On April 14, UNIFI, a world – leading innovator in recycled and synthetic yarns and the manufacturer of the REPREVE brand, made a major announcement with the launch of REPREVE products featuring CiCLO technology. This innovative technology endows recycled polyester and nylon with natural biodegradability, marking a significant breakthrough in upgrading the environmental performance of synthetic materials.

The new REPREVE products incorporate patented additives at the fiber level, making their properties more similar to those of natural materials like wool. The synthetic yarns enhanced by this technology can gradually decompose in natural environments such as soil and seawater, while fully maintaining product performance, durability, and dyeing characteristics. This directly addresses the problem of microplastic pollution caused by the shedding of synthetic fibers. Eddie Ingle, CEO of UNIFI, stated, “Throughout the entire product lifecycle, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact. The solution jointly developed with Intrinsic Advanced Materials offers a practical approach to solving the global issue of synthetic microfiber shedding, helping factories, brands, and retailers effectively reduce microplastic fiber pollution.” According to AsiaMB, these products can undergo natural degradation after prolonged exposure to moisture and microorganisms, significantly reducing the time synthetic fibers remain in the environment. Currently, many sustainability – minded brands, including Bass Pro Shops and Billabong, have started using products containing CiCLO. Cheryl Smyre, Vice President of Parkdale Advanced Materials, pointed out that this joint initiative combines the advantages of REPREVE and CiCLO technologies, not only improving product recyclability but also curbing microfiber pollution at the source, providing strong support for brands to fulfill their environmental commitments and meet regulatory requirements.

Looking back at the development of CiCLO technology, since its introduction in 2017, it has been dedicated to reducing microplastic pollution caused by synthetic textiles. The technology enables the natural decomposition of synthetic materials while ensuring the performance and recyclability of textiles. With global patent certifications, the OEKO – TEX ECO PASSPORT environmental certification, and rigorous testing by third – party laboratories based on international standards, it has gained wide market recognition. Currently, home and clothing products using CiCLO technology are sold by well – known brands and retailers such as Target and McDonald’s. As the developer of CiCLO technology, Intrinsic Advanced Materials (IAM), since its establishment in 2018, has combined the innovative DNA of Silicon Valley with industry expertise. Founded jointly by Intrinsic Textiles Group and Parkdale Advanced Materials, IAM continues to promote the production and application of CiCLO technology, helping the global textile industry move towards a greener and more sustainable future.
