Precipitated Barium Sulfate: A Game-Changer in Color Masterbatch Industry

August 16, 2024 – Recent research has highlighted the remarkable advantages of precipitated barium sulfate in the field of color masterbatches, effectively emerging as a viable替代for pigments with positive impacts on product coloration.

Experimental outcomes have revealed promising results when precipitated barium sulfate was substituted for various pigments like red, yellow, green, and blue in polyolefin color masterbatches. The color strength, reflectivity, and transmittance exhibited stable performance in both films and sample products made from these masterbatches. Notably, the substitution ratios varied among different pigments, but the average replacement amount reached approximately 20%.

Surprisingly, this substitution did not compromise the coloration quality of plastic products; in fact, it enhanced it in certain instances, thereby reducing production costs without compromising aesthetic appeal.

In another experiment, replacing 20% of titanium dioxide pigment with precipitated barium sulfate maintained other properties of the white masterbatch while significantly boosting the hiding power and increasing whiteness. This observation held true for different crystalline forms of titanium dioxide, indicating that the addition of precipitated barium sulfate effectively enhances both the covering power and whiteness of the product.

According to the Color Masterbatch Industry Network, the incorporation of precipitated barium sulfate in the production of masterbatches not only improves the covering power and whiteness of the final product but also aids in the better dispersion of titanium dioxide. These benefits position precipitated barium sulfate as a promising material in the color masterbatch industry.

Furthermore, the ultra-fine particle size, chemical inertia, and excellent transparency of precipitated barium sulfate have made it a favorite in the coatings industry. Paint manufacturers worldwide have widely adopted it as a filler to reduce overall material costs and enhance the mechanical properties of paints. In particular, the new coating precipitated barium sulfate, with its superior particle size distribution, higher whiteness, and lower oil absorption rate, has opened up more possibilities for the coatings industry.
