November 22, 2024 – BASF, Shanghai Gas under the Sheneng Group, and Shenji Environmental Technology have recently inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU), marking a deep collaboration in the biogas sector. This strategic move aims to propel the market application and international certification of biogas, jointly exploring sustainable solutions to accelerate the development of the circular economy.

Under the MOU, Shenji will shoulder the responsibility of developing biogas purification projects from livestock farms and waste disposal sites. Furthermore, based on biogas project certification, Shenji will collaborate with BASF to pilot a biogas mass balance application scenario. This entails Shenji supplying BASF with biogas that meets the ISCC+ certification standards, which will be delivered through Shanghai Gas’s pipeline network. BASF plans to integrate this biogas into its final products, thereby effectively reducing the carbon footprint of its offerings.
As reported by AsiaMB, this partnership holds landmark significance for BASF, marking its inaugural ISCC+ certified biogas pipeline delivery project in China. This not only demonstrates the high-value application potential of bio-based raw materials in the chemical industry but also lays a solid foundation for BASF to develop more sustainable innovative solutions in the future. Dr. Lou Jianfeng, Chairman and President of BASF Greater China, commented, “Biogas, as a green and renewable clean energy source and bio-based raw material, holds immense potential in replacing fossil raw materials. Our strategic collaboration with the Sheneng Group represents a significant breakthrough in exploring the commercial application of bio-based raw materials and advancing sustainability. This will empower us to launch a more diversified portfolio of products with a lower carbon footprint, thereby supporting our customers’ green transformation.”
It’s worth noting that Shanghai Gas, as the natural gas full industry chain development platform under the Sheneng Group and the primary operator of urban gas in Shanghai, holds a pivotal position in the industry. Meanwhile, Shenji, a subsidiary of Sheneng Environmental Technology, is a vital force in the field of waste resource utilization within the Sheneng Group. This tripartite collaboration will undoubtedly propel rapid development in the biogas sector, contributing to the establishment of a greener and more sustainable energy system.
