January 18, 2025 – Mitsui Chemicals Announces Capacity Expansion for MR™ Eyeglass Lens Material
Mitsui Chemicals has recently announced a significant capacity expansion for its exclusively developed MR™ eyeglass lens material. This move aims to cater to the escalating global demand for high-refractive-index eyeglass lenses. The polyurethane-based lens material, manufactured using advanced polymerization technology, boasts not only high refractive index and high Abbe number but also offers the benefits of lightweight and high impact resistance.

As the demand for high-performance eyeglass lens products continues to climb in Asia and the North American market seeks even higher optical clarity, polycarbonate lenses are gradually being phased out, making high-refractive-index lenses the new darling of the market. Seizing this market opportunity, Mitsui Chemicals completed the latest capacity enhancement for its MR™ eyeglass lens material in 2024.
According to AsiaMB, to meet the anticipated further growth in demand in the future, Mitsui Chemicals has decided to construct a new factory adjacent to the existing MR™ eyeglass lens material factory at its Omuta Plant in Japan. The construction of the new factory is currently in full swing and is expected to commence commercial operations in the first half of 2028. Additionally, through its Vision Care Materials division, Mitsui Chemicals remains committed to developing more innovative products aimed at correcting vision, improving eye health, and enhancing comfort, upholding the principle of Quality of Vision (QoV).
