Major Revamp Project for China Shenhua Erdos’s Coal-to-Liquids Facility Announced

January 18, 2025 – China Shenhua Erdos Coal to Liquids Division Announces Major Technological Upgrade

China Shenhua Erdos Coal to Liquids Chemical Co., Ltd. has recently unveiled plans to construct a revamping project for the commercial application of its second-generation direct coal liquefaction technology. Situated in the Wulanmulun Industrial Zone of the Shengyuan Coal Chemical Industry Base within the Mengsu Industrial Park in Erdos, Inner Mongolia, the project boasts a total investment of RMB 987.28 million, with RMB 7.245 million dedicated to environmental protection initiatives.

This revamping project represents a strategic adjustment and optimization of the original coal liquefaction process technology. Back in 2002 and 2005, the former State Environmental Protection Administration approved the environmental impact assessment report and its supplementary report for Shenhua’s direct coal liquefaction project, granting permission for its construction and establishing a coal liquefaction capacity of 3.24 million tonnes per annum. However, due to the adoption of first-generation coal liquefaction technology in the initial phase, the plant’s processing capacity fell short of the design output, operating at approximately 85% of its designated capacity.

According to insights from the Color Masterbatch Industry Network, in order to elevate the actual operating load of the initial phase, China Shenhua Erdos Coal to Liquids Chemical Co., Ltd. has decided to embark on a technological transformation. The scope of the modifications primarily encompasses the coal liquefaction unit, hydrogenation stabilization unit, and oil residue molding unit. The coal liquefaction unit will undergo changes such as the removal of the original internal circulation pumps at the bottom of the liquefaction reactors and the installation of larger circulation pumps at the bottom of the high-temperature and high-pressure separators, forming a larger circulation reaction system. This alteration aims to eliminate the vapor-liquid interface within the reactors and extend their operational lifespan. Additionally, the hydrogenation stabilization unit will witness the addition of a fixed-bed reactor, while the oil residue molding facility will gain two molding machines, two water pumps, and two circulating water pipeline pumps. These technological upgrades are expected to facilitate an annual coal-to-liquid production capacity of 1.08 million tonnes.

This technological transformation not only promises to enhance the actual operating load of the initial phase but also to further improve the production efficiency and product quality of coal-to-liquid production. It lays a solid foundation for the sustainable development of China Shenhua Erdos Coal to Liquids Chemical Co., Ltd., marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards technological advancement and operational excellence.
