Major Breakthrough in Hubei: Weiqi’s PHA Production Line Nears Completion

January 15, 2025 – Exciting new developments have emerged from Xiaoting, Hubei, as Hubei Weiqi Biotechnology Co., Ltd. races towards the official launch of its PHA biodegradable material project in the first quarter of this year. Despite the biting cold outside, the construction site of the company’s 30,000-tonne PHA project in Yichang is bustling with activity. The main structures of the fermentation and extraction workshop, drying workshop, and supporting utilities have all been completed, with workers diligently engaged in the installation and commissioning of equipment. They are working overtime and adhering to a reversed construction schedule to ensure the timely commissioning of the project.

According to industry insiders from Color Masterbatch Industrial Network, Hubei Weiqi Biotechnology Co., Ltd. established its foothold in Xiaoting, Yichang, with a total investment of RMB 1.05 billion in 2023. The project is implemented in two phases, with the first phase alone accounting for an investment of RMB 340 million. Upon completion, the project will not only provide over 100 jobs but is also expected to generate annual revenues of RMB 370 million for the enterprise once it reaches full capacity, while also contributing approximately RMB 34 million in taxes.

Notably, Weiqi Biology’s 30,000-tonne PHA biodegradable material project represents not only the largest planned PHA production line in China but also ranks third globally. This project serves as a model for the country’s development of new and advanced productive forces. It is a significant step forward in promoting synthetic biology for a green circular economy, supporting the “dual-carbon” strategy for energy conservation and emission reduction, and mitigating white plastic pollution.
