May 13, 2025 – LyondellBasell (LYB), a global chemical giant, has recently made a significant stride in its sustainability journey. The company has successfully inked a one – year agreement, ensuring that its manufacturing plant in Dalian, China, will be powered entirely by renewable electricity starting this year. This remarkable achievement marks the Dalian facility as the first LYB Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS) production base in Asia to operate solely on renewable energy.

With this transformation in power supply, LYB anticipates slashing nearly 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2025. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of around 1,000 passenger cars. This project not only aligns with the current environmental protection trends but also gives a strong impetus to China’s automotive industry in reducing product carbon footprints and exploring sustainable manufacturing solutions. According to insights from the Color Masterbatch Industry Network, the renewable electricity for the Dalian plant primarily comes from wind and solar photovoltaic power generation. This optimization of the energy structure further underscores LYB’s firm determination in its sustainability strategy.
“This accomplishment fully demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Rolf van Beeck, Vice President of APS for Asia Pacific and AfMEI at LYB. “As the demand for energy – efficient vehicles continues to surge, we are not only focused on supplying high – performance automotive materials but also actively collaborating with our customers to jointly carve out a sustainable future.” This transition was made possible thanks to the robust support of China’s Green Power Trading Plan. Through mechanisms such as Green Electricity Certificates (GEC) and Green Electricity Consumption Certificates (GECC), the plan enabled LYB to access renewable electricity at a cost lower than that of traditional energy sources, effectively proving that sustainable solutions can offer both environmental value and economic benefits.
Regarding its power procurement plans beyond 2025, LYB will make decisions by comprehensively considering multiple factors, including costs, energy availability, and its overall business strategy. This approach is highly consistent with the company’s long – term goal of balancing sustainability and operational efficiency. Since its establishment in 2015, the Dalian plant has been a crucial supplier of high – performance materials for the automotive industry, with its products widely used in key automotive components such as bumpers and dashboards. Now, with the implementation of the renewable electricity supply plan, LyondellBasell has not only effectively addressed current industry challenges but also set a new benchmark in the global arena of sustainable automotive manufacturing.
