LG Chem and Reifenhäuser Group Pioneer Recyclable MDO-PE Films

December 16, 2024 – LG Chem has made a groundbreaking achievement in the field of polyethylene film materials with the successful development of MDO-PE (Machine Direction Oriented Polyethylene) and BOPE (Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene) films. These innovations enable packaging materials to be converted into recyclable PE materials after use, contributing significantly to environmental conservation efforts. Recently, LG Chem signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Reifenhäuser Group, a renowned German packaging machinery manufacturer, to collaborate on the research, development, and sales of MDO-PE films and recyclable packaging laminates, aiming to create products with enhanced market competitiveness.

In the polyethylene film industry, films typically have a thickness exceeding 20μm. Achieving thinner films requires higher standards for materials, production equipment, and manufacturing processes. During an open day event, LG Chem and Reifenhäuser Group presented an impressive joint achievement to over 40 customers. Utilizing LG Chem’s UNIQABLE™ PE material and Reifenhäuser’s EVO Ultra Stretch MDO patented technology, they successfully produced a 18μm-thick MDO-PE film without PFAS. During test runs, the film demonstrated stable and continuous production and processing performance, earning high praise from on-site customers.

According to industry sources, MDO-PE, as a machine direction oriented polyethylene film, is widely used in various applications due to its excellent properties, including food packaging, laminate films, stand-up pouch packaging for liquids, industrial packaging, and multilayer packaging films. The collaboration between LG Chem and Reifenhäuser Group not only propels the further development and application of MDO-PE film technology but also provides robust support for the research and promotion of recyclable packaging materials. Both parties express their commitment to deepening their cooperation, exploring more innovative solutions, and contributing to the sustainable development of the global packaging industry.
