October 18, 2024 – Inner Mongolia Baofeng Coal-Based New Materials Co., Ltd. celebrated a significant milestone with the grand Central Delivery Ceremony held on October 14th, marking the successful delivery of the first series of olefin units for its 2.6 million tons/year coal-to-olefins and 400,000 tons/year green hydrogen-coupled olefin production project. The ceremony was honored by the presence of several senior leaders from Baofeng Energy Group, including Executive Vice President and Chairman of Inner Mongolia Baofeng, Gao Jianjun, Vice President Chen Zhaoyuan, and General Manager of Inner Mongolia Baofeng, Han Huashan. Additionally, Shi Jianming, Chairman of the China Chemical Engineering 14th Construction Co., Ltd., was invited to attend and deliver a congratulatory speech.

In his address, Shi Jianming extended warm congratulations on the successful central delivery of the first series of olefin units and expressed sincere gratitude for the continuous trust and support from Baofeng Energy Group. He emphasized that the Inner Mongolia Baofeng project, as the world’s largest olefin production facility in a single plant, holds immense significance in driving the coal-based new materials industry towards high-end, low-carbon, and clustered development. This project not only contributes to improving the regional energy structure but also vigorously promotes high-quality regional development and facilitates industrial transformation and upgrading.
According to Color Masterbatch Industry News, the project adopts an advanced green hydrogen and modern coal chemical industry协同生产工艺 (collaborative production process), with a total olefin production capacity of 3 million tons/year, setting a global record for the largest coal-to-olefins production in a single plant. Notably, it is also the world’s first innovative project to achieve large-scale substitution of fossil fuels with green hydrogen for olefin production.
As a key subsidiary of Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia Baofeng has established this major project in partnership with its wholly-owned subsidiary, Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group Olefin Plant No. 2 Co., Ltd., in Inner Mongolia. The project aims to integrate the construction of a wind-solar hydrogen production demonstration project, achieving carbon reduction through the coupling of green electricity, green oxygen, and green hydrogen, while reducing the purchase of external methanol and stabilizing olefin production capacity.
Located in the Tuke Industrial Project Area of Sulige Economic Development Zone, Uxin Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the project covers an area of 594.43 hectares and employs 3,500 personnel. The total investment in the project amounts to 47.81137 billion yuan, with a construction investment (including VAT) of 44.31109 billion yuan. The construction scale includes three sets of 2.2 million tons/year methanol units, three sets of 1 million tons/year methanol-to-olefins units, three sets of 500,000 tons/year polypropylene units, three sets of 550,000 tons/year polyethylene units, as well as a 200,000 tons/year C4-to-1-butene unit and a 200,000 tons/year steam cracking unit. Besides producing polypropylene and polyethylene, the project will also yield various by-products such as sulfur, heavy C4, C5+, ethylene tar, and MTBE.
