Fuel Shortage in Gaza: Pyrolysis Devices Become Lifeline for Residents

March 14, 2025 – Gaza Strip Grapples with Severe Fuel Crisis Amid Escalating Conflict

The ongoing escalation of the conflict between Palestine and Israel has plunged the Gaza Strip into a dire fuel crisis. In a recent move that has exacerbated the situation, Israel decided to shut down three crucial border crossings connecting to Gaza, severely limiting the entry of essential resources.

Amid this acute shortage of fuel, Gaza residents have been forced to resort to desperate measures. They are now utilizing makeshift pyrolysis devices to extract fuel from plastic waste, in a bid to keep their vehicles running and their lives somewhat normal. These rudimentary devices employ a complex process of heating, condensation, separation, and refinement to convert plastic into usable fuel.

Asad, a resident who operates one such device, expressed his helplessness. “We extract gasoline and diesel from discarded plastic products,” he said. “Although the purity is not high, it’s enough to keep our vehicles moving. In this besieged environment, it’s our only means of survival.” Asad acknowledged that the black smoke emitted during the process contains harmful substances, but they have no other choice in the face of such dire circumstances.

The high cost of fuel has become a burden for both drivers and the general public in Gaza. Taxi driver Shahin lamented, “The fuel costs are through the roof, making it extremely difficult for us to operate. Passengers are also bearing the brunt of higher transportation fees, and everyone is feeling the pinch.”

Yasir, another Gaza resident, echoed Shahin’s sentiments. “Transportation has become both difficult and expensive due to the skyrocketing fuel prices,” he said. “There are fewer cars on the streets now because people simply can’t afford to fuel their vehicles.”

This fuel crisis is taking a heavy toll on the daily lives of Gaza’s residents, compounding the already challenging conditions they face amid the ongoing conflict.
