Jieyang Emerges as Green Petrochemical Powerhouse in Greater Bay Area

AsiaMB reports that Jieyang’s Dainanhai Petrochemical Industrial Zone is rapidly transforming into a world-class petrochemical hub through strategic investments exceeding 65.4 billion yuan. The 45.6-square-kilometer complex has become Guangdong’s newest petrochemical growth engine after passing provincial accreditation in April 2025.

The zone’s centerpiece is China National Petroleum Corporation’s (CNPC) integrated refining complex featuring:
• 20 million-ton annual crude oil processing capacity
• World’s largest single-train styrene unit (800,000 tons/year)
• Advanced heavy oil processing technology
• 1.2 million-ton ethylene and 2.6 million-ton PX production capabilities

“Jieyang’s ‘one-chain, one-park, one-base’ strategy creates unique synergies,” explained a municipal development official. The model combines:
• A complete petrochemical value chain anchored by CNPC
• Specialized wet electronic chemicals park
• Green circular materials production base

The zone has attracted 14 downstream projects worth 50 billion yuan in total output, benefiting from:
• On-site feedstock supply networks
• Shared infrastructure
• Reduced logistics costs

Innovation highlights include:
• Guangdong Petrochemical’s development of 17 new chemical products
• Dongyue Chemical’s pioneering 200,000-ton mixed plastic waste recycling facility
• Plans to expand chemical recycling capacity to 3 million tons annually

Economic impacts are already significant:
• Jieyang recorded 7.5% GDP growth in 2023 – Guangdong’s highest
• Industrial output projected to reach 250 billion yuan by 2035
• Creation of high-value jobs in technical fields

“Jieyang demonstrates how secondary cities can build advanced manufacturing clusters,” said AsiaMB’s energy analyst. “Their focus on circular economy principles sets a benchmark for sustainable petrochemical development.”

The city’s strategic location offers access to:
• Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area markets
• Coastal shipping routes
• Southeast Asian export channels

With continued investment in green technologies and specialty chemicals, Jieyang is positioned to become a key contributor to China’s petrochemical innovation and low-carbon transition.
