Ethylene Forum 2024: Exploring High-End New Materials Opportunities

August 09, 2024 – The Ethylene Downstream High-end New Materials Forum is scheduled to take place on September 11, 2024, in Lianyungang. This forum will concentrate on the policy trends of the ethylene industry chain in the context of carbon peak and neutrality, while deeply exploring market opportunities for high-end downstream new materials. These innovative products encompass a wide range, including metallocene polyethylene, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, COC/COP cycloolefin polymers, POE and EPOE, EVOH, PVA, and various other cutting-edge materials. Furthermore, the conference will also highlight the development of new technologies and projects, alongside the competitive advantages of different technological approaches.

Recent developments in the ethylene industry chain have seen significant progress in several key projects. Notably, the thousand-ton pilot project for ethylene oligomerization to produce high-carbon α-olefins has entered the second public notice stage of environmental impact assessment. Located in the Pucheng New Material Industry Cluster, this project, with a total investment exceeding 52 million yuan, is being implemented by Pucheng Clean Energy Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. Additionally, as the owner of the country’s first DMTO-II technology application demonstration device, Pujie Nenghua is actively advancing the potential-tapping and efficiency-improving renovation of the MTO and olefin separation units. The company also plans to implement a 40,000-ton/year ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene project.

According to the Color Masterbatch Industry Network, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, as a thermoplastic engineering plastic with excellent performance, holds vast application prospects in military, aerospace, lithium battery separators, and other fields. Pujie Nenghua’s project not only boasts high technological content but also carries significant product added value, fully aligning with the national requirements for “specialized, fine, unique, and innovative” projects. Currently, the project is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2025.

With the advancement of technologies such as refinery integration, ethane cracking, and coal (methanol) to olefins, the supply of ethylene raw materials will become more abundant in the future. However, the current profitability of common ethylene downstream products such as general-purpose polyethylene and ethylene glycol is not ideal. Therefore, promoting the development of the ethylene downstream high-end new materials industry has become the focus of the industry. In this context, the upcoming Lianyungang forum undoubtedly provides a valuable communication platform for the industry to jointly explore and seize future market opportunities.
