Engineering Plastics: The Versatile Material of the Future

August 10, 2024 – Significant Progress in Guangjin New Materials’ BDO-PBAT Integrated Project

Wuhai Guangjin New Materials Co., Ltd. is making substantial headway in its ambitious BDO-PBAT integrated project, located within the Low-Carbon Industrial Park of the Hainan District High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. According to Deputy General Manager Tang Hao, the overall project progress has reached 70%, with design progress at 96%, procurement at 88%, and construction progress at 52%. Notably, all main equipment for the installation has been put in place.

The multi-phase BDO-PBAT integrated project, with a total investment of 5.777 billion yuan, aims to revolutionize the environmental material industry. Phase I focuses on the construction of a 300,000-ton annual capacity BDO (1,4-butanediol) plant. This involves the installation of acetylene, BDO, and formaldehyde units, alongside supporting facilities. The BDO plant, utilizing cutting-edge acetylene-formaldehyde technology, converts acetylene, formaldehyde, and hydrogen into BDO.

Looking ahead, Phase II of the project is slated to concentrate on the construction of a 300,000-ton annual capacity PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) plant. This biodegradable plastic will be produced using the transesterification method, with PTA (purified terephthalic acid), AA (adipic acid), and BDO from the upstream plant serving as primary raw materials. The main product, PBAT chips, will be accompanied by tetrahydrofuran as a by-product.

The company is vigorously monitoring the project’s progress, striving to complete delivery by the first half of next year. Additionally, plans are in place to conduct a feed test on the BDO plant in the latter half of the year, marking a crucial step towards operational readiness.

This development not only underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability but also paves the way for a greener future in the plastics industry.
