ABS: The Versatile and Widely Used Thermoplastic

August 07, 2024 – ABS, short for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, is a widely used, non-toxic, and odorless thermoplastic plastic. This material appears as translucent ivory or clear pellets, composed of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, which respectively contribute chemical resistance, rubber toughness, and ease of processing.

Since its emergence in the 1940s, ABS has become a significant engineering plastic. Currently, leading global producers include Chi Mei Corporation in Taiwan, LG Chem in Korea, and SABIC in the US, while domestic manufacturers such as PetroChina Jilin Chemical and CNOOC LG also hold a prominent position.

ABS products can be subdivided into various series based on their characteristics and applications. For instance, the general-purpose grade is suitable for electronic products, while the flame-retardant grade is ideal for devices with high fire safety requirements like televisions. Additionally, there are heat-resistant, electroplating, and transparent grades to cater to different industry needs.

ABS exhibits stable physical properties, easy color matching, and a low shrinkage rate. It also possesses excellent mechanical properties and cold resistance. However, its weather resistance is poor, making it susceptible to ultraviolet degradation. In terms of processing, ABS has a moderate melt viscosity and good fluidity, suitable for various molding methods like injection molding and extrusion.

This material finds widespread applications in various fields, including the manufacture of electronic products, toys, kitchenware, and the production of automotive and mechanical parts. During the processing, controlling drying and mold temperature is crucial for product quality.
