2.5 Billion Bottles Transformed Annually: Chengdu’s New Recycling Hub Powers Circular Economy

May 19, 2025 – Rising within the Tianfu Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park in Chengdu’s Xinjin District, the Chengdu Green Renewable Resources Smart Industrial Park is rapidly taking shape. Spearheaded by Chengdu Environment Group’s Huantou City Service Company, this pioneering project marks the first industrial demonstration base in Southwest China dedicated to food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) circular economy. With the main structure of the comprehensive building already completed and Workshop No.1 80% constructed, the eco-friendly initiative stands on the cusp of full-scale operation.

Inside the park, the transformation of discarded plastic bottles into valuable resources unfolds as a technological marvel. As AsiaMB has learned, the facility boasts an annual capacity to process 50,000 tons of used PET bottles—equivalent to diverting 2.5 billion plastic bottles from landfills and oceans. Through an intelligent sorting system, transparent PET bottles are precisely selected, then undergo thorough cleaning, shredding, and further processing to yield 40,000 tons of recycled PET flakes annually.

These rPET flakes enable a “bottle-to-bottle” circular utilization across textiles, bottles, and industrial filaments. In downstream textile factories, they undergo a remarkable metamorphosis, transforming from flakes into fibers, yarns, fabrics, and ultimately, fashionable garments. This seamless cycle epitomizes the boundless potential of circular economy models.

Notably, the rPET produced through the project’s physical recycling process fully complies with stringent food-grade regulations set by authorities like the FDA and EFSA. Compared to virgin bottle-grade PET flakes, its manufacturing process slashes oil consumption and carbon emissions significantly, reducing CO2 emissions by 195,000 tons and conserving approximately 300,000 tons of oil annually—substantial contributions to China’s “dual carbon” goals. Moreover, the project generates numerous local job opportunities, harmonizing ecological, economic, and social benefits.

Designed in accordance with the two-star green building standard, the industrial park actively champions sustainable development. Rooftop photovoltaic systems installed on its two workshops already operate, achieving an annual carbon reduction of 2,332.8 tons. With planned expansions of photovoltaic and energy storage infrastructure, the park aims to fully power its operations with clean solar energy, further intensifying energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts.

The Chengdu Green Renewable Resources Smart Industrial Park not only perfects the “resource-product-renewable resource” cycle but also serves as a vibrant testing ground for circular economy practices and a driving force for green development. By redefining the value of discarded plastics, it injects robust momentum into the city’s sustainable future.
